Ni Zheng (b. 1997, CN) is a composer of electroacoustic music, creating sonic rituals that conjure the erotic and poetics of the body and muse on the carnality and grotesque of the flesh. Her practice calls for a descent into untamed territory, dwelling in and listening intently to the swampy pool of undead, uncivilized feelings and emotions she considers her reserve. She exorcises raw impulses, negativity, rage, messiness as libation and tactic against all forms of domestication.

Ni is devoted to celebrating and catalyzing mystical state of ecstatic communication with both fellow humans and non-humans, she surrenders herself unconditionally to deviant and altered states of knowledge — intimate, sensual, relational, and immanent — in encounters with the other, the sacred, occulted, and chthonic realms of nature and the land she inhabits. Her mediums of communication include vocal performance that is visceral, feral, and atavistic, field recordings gathered during visits to desolate and ravaged locations, and a fusion of electronic and acoustic instruments.

Ni’s debut album, “Body of Immanence,” a collection of electroacoustic compositions brimming with rapturous corporeality and hyperrealistic soundscapes, was released by Syrphe (Germany) in 2023. The French magazine La Revue des Ressources described it as “bewitching and conjuring. It opens a rift, creates a tear in the order of the world, and to risk it is to put oneself to the test. It's a form of ‘theater of cruelty’ as Artaud conceived it.” Commissioned by Danish label Don’t Look Back Records and supported by a production grant from S. C. Van Fonden (Denmark), her second solo album, “fetid things,” was released on CD in June 2024.

Ni is the recipient of the Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen Fellowship Residency (2025) and the Talea Ensemble Early Career Commissioning Program (2024/25 season). Her electroacoustic works and instrumental compositions have been presented and performed internationally at various conferences and festivals, including Festival d'Automne à Paris, Podium Festival Esslingen, impuls Festival, MA/IN Festival, Festival Mixtur, Art, Research and Creation Opus, Sound Spaces in Collaboration with Intonal Festival, the International Computer Music Conference, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, and SPLICE.

Ni graduated with a bachelor’s degree in composition from New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. Currently, she is a PhD candidate in music composition at the University of California, San Diego.
