My main field of interest rests in the extreme reduction of musical material as well as its detachment from precise timing, through the usage of graphic notation.

I like to create very simple soundscapes that flow and evolve slightly out of the same core of skeletal material, playing with the idea of perception.

Repetition, Loops, Patterns and Drones are essential building blocks for it.

one of my goals is to not be fully in control of a score, but rather have musicians and interpreters challenge my perception and imagination of it.

Samuele Giulio Ferrari is an Italian composer based in Salzburg, Austria. He was born in Milan, Italy in 2001. Being exposed to different approaches to music from a young age, Samuele started developing an interest towards composition in the early stages of his musical development. His musical education included playing the violin and viola from a young age, his teachers included Members of the La Scala Orchestra in Milan as well as the Munich Philharmonic. In 2021 he started his composition studies at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with composer Prof. Christian Ofenbauer.

His pieces have been performed in venues such as Limina Festival in Salzburg, “Neue Musik in St.Ruprecht” Festival in Vienna, EXPAN in Spittal an der Drau and ISCM Avant-Garde 100 in Vilnius.

He has worked with notable Ensembles such as Names, Ensemble Wiener Collage, Twenty Fingers Duo, Oenm, Duo Strings&Noise, Duo Ovocutters and Cantando Admont. His pieces have been performed in Austria and Lithuania.

In 2024 he was awarded the Gustav Mahler composition Prize.

His pieces have been broadcasted by Austrian radio station Ö1.

In 2023 he founded a collective for electroacoustic improvisation called “Bean$” alongside his two fellow composers and sound artists Nicolas Speda and Tibor Kovacs. This collective fuses instrumental live-electronics with modular synthesisers as well as live-coding and digital audio processing. Here, Samuele improvises on up until two electric guitars, using a wide range of fx pedals, extended techniques and live electronics.
