Many Things is a collection of five short bagatelles for wind quintet, greatly inspired by Ligeti's 6 Bagatelles for Wind Quintet. The five bagatelles are united through common motifs and the Bartok inspired arch form that encompass them, allowing them to be performed individually, in sets, or even all of them, as a multi-movement work in the order provided.
I. Many Swells: As the title suggests, this bagatelles consists of many swells, first alongside counterpoint between melodies that are inversions of each other, and later through the movement of special chord sonorities, before a return to the opening material.
II. Many Honks: It's fast, HONK! it's high, HONK! and its HONK! familiar? hopefully, HONK! but I won't HONK! blame you HONK! if you can't HONK! recognise it! HONK! There are HONK! after all, HONK! Many Honks!
III. Many Loops: Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops This bagatelle sits at the center of the entire work, mirroring the arch structure of the work, whilst built from familiar musical material. Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops Many Loops.
IV. Many Huffs and Puffs: The Big Bad Wolf was infamous for huffing and puffing (and blowing down the houses of poor little pigs) but even he can't keep up with the huffy puffiness of this bagatelle! It just keeps growing and growing (until it doesn't).
V. Many Birds?: This bagatelle starts with many bird like figures but they don't last for ever. Was it the geese? Or maybe even a jealous Big Bad Wolf?! Or maybe the birds were just trying to mask sllews ynam.
