- “Jawbreaker” is a title that reflects the idea that trauma can often linger on years after they occur. These thoughts linger over our existence and catch us off guard like a sucker-punch and leaving us dazed and confused. This piece represents this idea musically through the use of jarring transitions between completely different sounds, both from the avant-garde and the simple. This piece is somewhat unorthodox in that it places the spotlight on the cello for the whole piece, rather than the violins. The Cellist carries the melody of the piece, and functions as a literal “voice”. The other players around exert a jarring, brutal outside force that traumatizes the cello’s statements throughout the piece. The composition is an interplay between the jarring noises of the upper strings and the expressive lines of the cello.
