This work places the musical form of pìobaireachd within an electroacoustic context. Pìobaireachd is a form of Scottish traditional music which is generally characterised as a strict type of ‘theme and variations’ which become increasingly complex as the work goes on. However, rather than following the usual strict set and structure of this tradition, I chose to interpret this form more generally and apply the increasingly complex structure to the electronic variations and developments of the smallpipes’ material.
The movements of this work explore the images of standing stones and the lighting of a Beltane bonfire.
