- Soul Searching is an effort to combine my love of funk with my some of my main compositional tendencies (specifically my tendency to write quiet, slowly unfolding music) in a way that made musical sense. I made transcriptions of licks and bass lines of dozens of classic funk songs, including songs by James Brown, Betty Davis, and Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers. The last third of this quartet uses layered transcriptions of the bass lines from these songs to create a sort of harsh funk polyphony. Songs used include: James Brown: Make It Funky Funky President Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved Talking Loud and Saying Nothing Betty Davis: Anti-Love Song Git In There Nasty Gal Don't You Call Her No Tramp Your Mama Wants You Back Soul Searchers: We The People. The quote from We The People is a distinct horn lick, the culmination of the long progress toward unity and funkiness. All four saxophones proudly blast this hook at the end of the second big section of the piece, and again at the very end (this time skipping like a scratched record into silence). Soul Searching was commissioned by the h2 Quartet, and premiered at the North American Saxophone Alliance regional conference at Oklahoma State University in March 2017.
