Two Islands is a piece depicting two instrumental groups (flute & piano) (clarinet & strings) and the relationship between them. They communicate in an idyllic manner, wandering around topics to have a conversation about until they suddenly plunge into a dense and turbulent tangent. Once the tension is lifted, quiet and reflective gestures act as a form of wistful reconciliation.
A few months before writing this piece, I faced a personal struggle between myself and someone I cared about, and how distance between us slowly formed a continuously growing ocean of misunderstandings, numbness, and frustration. The title represents the state of mind I was in, and expresses my longing for a moment of reconnection.
