Premiered at Michigan State University
Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870) was an important poet of the Spanish Romantic movement. His works
are well known for their lyricism and exploration of themes of love, nature, and the supernatural. His masterful
exploration of these timeless themes is the reason why I chose to set three of his Rimas (of which he has over
100).

Los invisibles átomos del aire
en derredor palpitan y se in aman,
el cielo se deshace en rayos de oro,
la tierra se estremece alborozada.
Oigo otando en olas de armonías,
rumor de besos y batir de alas;
mis párpados se cierran... ?¿Qué sucede?
¿Dime?
¡Silencio! ¡Es el amor que pasa!

The invisible atoms of the air
all around palpitate and ignite,
the sky undoes itself into rays of gold,
the earth trembles with joy.
I hear oating in waves of harmonies,
rumor of kisses and flapping of wings;
my eyelids close...?What's happening?

Silence! It's love that happens!
