Sich lieben in einer Zeit

The composition is based on the poem "Durcheinander" by Erich Fried. To love one another and at the same time be able to kill one another: a contradiction almost unbearable is inherent in human nature. Erich Fried addresses this contradiction line by line in his poem, making the absurdity and powerlessness in the face of it tangible. The setting takes up this powerlessness - time and again, the melody returns to the gently rising theme of the beginning in a lovely F-sharp major. Despite the described cruelty of humanity, which is played on the piano through some dissonant chords, the vocal line is not infected by the violence; it spans a tender arc over it and transforms it into something beautiful.
