- Gaia, titled after the Greek goddess of Earth and the mother of all life, is a piece that is meant to show a connection between music and nature. Written to evoke the feelings of subtlety in the sounds of nature, I wanted to create a soundscape that exists naturally. Nature is something that does not have a sense of pulse or meter, no harmonic progression or melody, and I wanted the music in this piece to reflect this. The music flows in time naturally, just as the sound of wind flows over a mountain range or how a tree rustles as the breeze shakes it. To help reinforce this I chose to avoid harmonic structures or melodic ideas. Except for a cello solo which takes place halfway through the piece, there is no strong sense of melody or rhythm to the music. Even when pitch does exist, it is used more as an effect within the soundscape rather than harmonic material. This piece has a deep rooted connection to nature and Earth and the resulting sounds are to reflect that.
