The term “sunsight” was a proposed term to replace “sunrise” that never caught on. The title of the movement comes from the three stages of “sunsight.” The first movement, Astronomical, represents the darkest part of twilight through dissonances and exploratory harmonies. During nautical twilight, the sun just begins to show and stars are still visible, represented by legato and staccato figures. Civil twilight is the brightest stage, which is represented by celebratory rhythms and fanfares.
