A Cup of Tea is a poignant musical reflection on the life and legacy of Eleanor Roosevelt, one of America’s most influential First Ladies. Set around 1960, just a few years before her passing, the song imagines a quiet yet powerful moment: Eleanor sharing tea with a young Black woman. This fictional meeting becomes a lens through which Roosevelt’s enduring commitment to civil rights and social justice is explored.  The piece is inspired by Roosevelt’s evocative quote:“My heart is like this bag of tea — can’t tell its strength till it’s in hot water.”

This metaphor serves as a central theme, symbolizing the resilience and inner fortitude of women, especially in times of adversity. The song captures Eleanor’s voice as she reflects on the challenges facing the United States, particularly the threats to equality and freedom. Interwoven with references to the iconic gospel hymn “We Shall Overcome,” the song pays homage to the Civil Rights Movement and its enduring message of hope.
