- This piece came from a place of inspiration from other pieces written about this tragic Biblical story, more specifically, Eric Whitacre’s rendition entitled “When David Heard”. The first time I heard this version performed was like I was transported into the moment it was happening. I could feel David’s anguish and grief pouring out of his heart at the loss of his beloved son. I felt the need to give my own interpretation and portrayal of that pain, and the result is the following work. Through the use of piercing dissonances and echoing cries, I feel I did an excellent job of portraying the despair he felt, as well as the burning rage towards the soldiers in his army who tortured and dishonorably killed Absalom.
