- Glass Abattoir combines spoken, sung, whispered, and (at points) screamed text on three different albeit loosely connected topics in a counterpoint of texture and emergence of plausible interpretations. Although non-linear in character, the topics converge in a sort of psychological progression, in perhaps the same manner as a conversation at a dinner table may take place. One topic deals with specific accounts of post-traumatic stress disorder; another, the Cherokee Indians’ Trail of Tears; the other, the Bolivian water crisis of the late 1990’s. These topics are unified by a fourth text – fragmented quotes from the author Henry Miller. Although not overtly so, these historical accounts (whether anecdotal or documentary in nature) may be related in the way each shows ways in which different aspects of society have dealt with the manipulation and exploitation of resources both abundant and scarce. The title (an “abattoir” is a slaughterhouse) refers, in a broad sense, to the way consequences of some decisions are deliberately hidden from view.
