- Named for the arrows and lines used in the score, Linear instruction for Clarinet and Piano explores the idea of sheet music being nothing but a road map or “instruction” booklet. Using arrows and large blocks on the staff as well as regular notes, the Linear Instruction combines standard notation with graphic notation. Much of the music is left to be improvised by the performers, however they are given guidance as to range, dynamics, direction, and rough duration of what they are playing. This freedom from specific pitch and rhythm allows the performers much more raw expression and emotion.
