XenaKube is a work for smart Rubik’s cube, virtual cello, live score, and spatial performance system. Each turn enters a stateful musical machine, producing a cello phrase whose detail depends on the accumulated cube-state.
The project takes its point of departure from Xenakis’s Nomos Alpha, its use of cube symmetries, permutation, sound-complexes, and sieve-based pitch thinking.
In XenaKube, these ideas are recast as a live instrument. Its attacks, resonances, glissandi, densities, registers, and articulations are shaped by the changing state of the system.
The performance is transcribed in real-time, a trace of what the system has just played.
