relief /rɪˈliːf/
n. a sculptural technique in which figures project from a supporting surface; from the Latin relevare, meaning to raise or alleviate.
n. the state of being clearly visible or accentuated.
n. a feeling of reassurance or release from anxiety.
relief takes its title from the architectural technique in which sculpted forms project from a supporting surface, translating this concept musically through texture and timbre in the wind quintet. The work explores how a homogeneous, heterophonic sound world can emerge from five instruments that traditionally occupy distinct roles, hierarchies, and functions within the ensemble. By focusing on the gradual emergence, projection, and recession of individual voices within a shared sonic plane, the piece seeks to blur distinctions between foreground and background, allowing timbre, density, and collective colour to shape the musical narrative.
