In 2 Samuel, King David is described as dancing “before the Lord with all his might,” clothed in a simple linen garment, unashamed, unrestrained, and overflowing with joy. That image—of a king casting off dignity to move in pure freedom—became the heartbeat of this piece.

David’s Dance is an orchestral portrait that encompasses the many dimensions of David’s life: Musician. Poet. Shepherd. Warrior. King. Worshiper. Each facet finds its way into the music. The shepherd’s simplicity is heard in the tender lyricism, the poet’s soul in melodic turns that feel like psalms. The warrior’s fire beats in the percussion, while the king’s majesty rises in sweeping harmonies. Yet at the center is the worshiper—David, barefoot in the dust, spinning and leaping before God with all his might.

This work does not attempt to reconstruct ancient music.
