A Baby Sleeps

A Baby Sleeps is a setting of Loretta Minghella’s evocative Christmas text, which reflects on the stillness and significance of the Nativity. The carol unfolds in three verses, each exploring a different perspective on the sleeping infant, his immediate presence, his future sacrifice, and his enduring role as a bearer of hope.

The music embraces a sense of quiet reverence, with delicate vocal textures that shift between sung and unpitched sounds. Through the use of timbral variation, hummed tones, whispered fricatives, and fluid transitions between them, the piece creates an atmosphere of hushed awe, mirroring the intimacy of the text. These sonorities are shaped by the notational details, which encourage a nuanced and expressive performance, balancing clarity with an ethereal quality.

As the carol unfolds, its harmonic language remains tender yet luminous, supporting the gentle rise and fall of the text’s imagery. The final lines, carried on ‘the wings of the morning,’ bring a sense of quiet triumph, as the fragility of the child and the vastness of his significance come together in a moment of stillness and light.
