When I was composing “B E I” for three cellos, I imagined a piece of fabric. Each thread in this fabric has the potential to both intertwine and unravel. This fabric feels incredibly smooth and harmonious at times, and at others it becomes rough and frayed, even burned down into ashes. While writing this piece, I asked myself: how can I weave together unconventional techniques with traditional sounds? And why do I want to do so? There were many “why” and “how” questions in the process of composing”B E I,” and as such I feel that it represents a significant milestone in my musical journey. With this piece, my goal is to combine disparate sounds and performance practices in an organically unified whole. I had such a great time collaborating on this piece with my dear friends Ben, Esther and Ijou, whose initials form the title of the work
