Lake Ontario - Andrew Bergeron
This piece was written for Carmen Maret's Guinean flute, the tambin. The instrument carries its own tuning
system, with A♭ and D♭ sitting outside equal temperament. Rather than adjusting or avoiding
them, I let those pitch tendencies shape the harmonic language, and my melodic sense grew directly
from the instrument itself.
Like my piece Lake Huron, it draws on the Saharan blues of Tinariwen and on polyrhythms built from
interacting cycles of two and three. The result is groove-driven and subtly pop-inflected, grounded in
the instrument’s earthy timbre.
It extends the album’s conversation about place and cross-cultural influence, in dialogue with the
history of the tambin across West and Central Africa.
