My good friend and long-term collaborator Leon asked me to write a piece for his final recital at the Guildhall school. It had only one requirement - to be based/inspired, in someway, by Cesar Franck's sonata for violin and piano, which would immediately follow my piece in the recital.
The prospect of writing a piece to preceed such a monolith of the violin repertoire was, to put it lightly, daunting. SOLAR ((birds)) is a humorous, silly, but deeply respectful accompaniment to a revered piece of violin repertoire.
It also delves into interplanetary exploration. For some reason.
