I have long employed the technique of colliding quarter tones with the twelve-tone equal temperament. This readily renders the sound distorted. Having held a strong interest in the “ambiguity of sound”, I consider this an effective method for reinforcing my musical concept when composing.
In this piece, I endeavour to apply the distortion caused by quarter tones thoroughly along a horizontal axis, that is, within a linear compositional approach. The piece naturally assumes the form of a simple melody.
Incidentally, although Debussy's famous sonata for this instrumentation was written over a century ago, the music feels almost entirely different – to the point where few commonalities can be discerned – not merely due to the passage of time, but because the very focus of musical interest has shifted.
