“Obsession”, as its title suggests, is a duet for violin and piano built on the obsessive repetition and variation of a fundamental motif: E–F–E–F–G. A polystylistic approach shapes the work, resulting in a markedly heterogeneous musical fabric that nevertheless remains unified by its underlying, elemental core.
The expressive spectrum it encompasses ranges from repetitive patterns undergoing gradual transformation in the tradition of American minimalism, to sarcastic and grotesque flirtations with the blues, a slow, meditative lament, a violin cadenza in a distinctly concertante manner, and a brutal canon that brings the work to its conclusion.
“Obsession” invites reflection on whether true freedom requires the creation of a personal, inner fixation, ultimately posing the question: Can it be otherwise?
