Gaz aux étages

’gaz aux étages’ [gas in the floors] is a text found on small, blue enameled signs that started appearing next to the front doors of narrow Brussels townhouses in the late 1800s. These signal that the communal gas distribution is installed in all floors. This piece is a love song for one of these gas-fitted multi-storey dwellings in which I grew up on Rue du Beffroi in Brussels. Originally written for viola, the piece has here been arranged for viola d’amore together with Marco Fusi.
