During some pandemic downtime I enjoyed playing around with the rhythms of triplets, quintuplets, and septuplets set against changing meters and beat durations and listening to the MIDI playback. But I thought “What live musicians could ever perform such a thing?” Then I remembered the fun I’ve had over the years putting together chamber ensemble pieces with my amazing faculty colleagues and brought together an all-star 10-piece ensemble, stacked with the kind of adventurous virtuosos whose spirit and commitment make the Jacobs School a composer’s heaven. There’s some inspiration from alt-metal rock bands like Meshuggah and the Cardiacs, and even some Duke Ellington in the lyric slow section.
