- The piece plays with elements, ideas, and structures from three different sources: two paintings by Paul Klee (Monument in the Fertile Land and Monument on the Border of the Fertile Land, along with Boulez's text (Le Pays fertile: Paul Klee)); a madrigal by Gesualdo (S’io non miro non moro); and Fragments of Narcissus by Paul Valéry. The text used consists of fragments (sometimes only syllables) taken from both Gesualdo's madrigal and Valéry's poem.
