Every 4th variation is a contrapuntal variation on the theme. Variations 4 and 8 are an inversion canon and mensuration canon, and the last variation is the fugue.
Rather than each variation be segmented and focused only on textural changes, this work differs in that each variation grows from the previous one and new motivic variations can be logically traced backwards to the start of the composition.
The fugue is also abnormal in that it's expositional key structure does not follow a tonic-dominant relationship but is derived from the augmented triad, as this sonority features throughout the piece.
