The term ens (from the Latin verb esse, “to exist”) designates a being or entity, a core ontological concept of medieval scholastic thought. In this ensemble work, instrument-specific gestures, phonemes, overtone-based textures, and drone-like sound fields shape, across seven short stages, the emergence of a metaphorical breathing creature. The title ENS also refers to the enteric nervous system - the autonomous neural network within the human body that is connected to the brain, yet capable of functioning independently in a “visceral” manner. It possesses its own reflexes and regulatory mechanisms and is therefore often referred to as the bodyʼs “second brain.” The enteric nervous system generates neural and hormonal responses, frequently preceding conscious thought, and expresses emotional states through direct bodily reactions.
