Danny Boy by Quincy Hilliard, published exclusively by Alias Press. Danny Boy was commissioned in honor of John Drechen, for his thirty-five years of dedication to the Lower Cape May Regional School District. This arrangement of Danny Boy was written to capture and celebrate the timeless beauty of one of the most beloved melodies ever composed. Dr. Quincy Hilliard has crafted this setting to highlight the expressive warmth and lyrical potential of the concert band, allowing both conductor and ensemble to explore a wide range of color and emotion. The euphonium presents the opening statement of the melody with tenderness and grace, supported by rich harmonic textures in the accompaniment. Conductors are encouraged to shape each phrase with freedom, using rallentandos, rubatos, and subtle tempo shifts to bring their own interpretive voice to the music. Care should be taken to maintain balance and restraint, letting the simplicity and emotional depth of the tune speak naturally. The closing cadenza is ad libitum, offering the soloist complete freedom of expression. Above all, approach the piece with joy—have fun, and make music!
