New Moon was commissioned by my friend John Plate for his Master’s recital at the University of Maryland. It is a sequel to a previous piece I wrote for solo bass drum, Red Crescent Rising. The first section of this piece uses the bass drum, a nod to its predecessor, and introduces two main themes. Next, the second section utilizes free time signatures and musical ideas found in Rebonds by Iannis Xenakis and various Casey Cangelosi pieces. Ideas from the first two sections converge in the final section, and the themes from the beginning are presented once again.
