- 22COF is a study in process, pattern, and transformation. Drawing inspiration from composers such as Xenakis and Steve Reich, the work explores the intersection of mathematics and music, using systematic procedures as a means of generating and developing musical material. At the heart of the piece lies the Circle of Fifths, which serves not only as a source of pitch organisation but as a framework through which numerical relationships can unfold and evolve. Rather than following a traditional narrative, 22COF allows its musical language to emerge from a series of interconnected processes, creating a constantly shifting landscape of rhythmic activity, motivic development, and harmonic transformation. Written for clarinet, bassoon, and saxophone, the work embraces precision, momentum, and complexity. Intricate rhythmic structures and tightly woven interactions between the instruments create a sense of perpetual motion, as ideas are manipulated, expanded, and reconfigured through the underlying system. The result is a piece that balances intellectual rigour with musical energy, revealing how mathematical concepts can generate expressive and engaging musical experiences.
