A Duet of Intelligences explores the evolving relationship between human and artificial intelligence through a dynamic, narrative-driven piano composition. A pianist begins by performing a traditional piece, gradually accelerating to mirror the relentless pace of modern life. As the tempo increases, the music becomes unmanageable. Despite trying her best, her efforts are betrayed by audible mistakes that are unavoidable in such a harsh environment.
Suddenly, the piano begins to respond autonomously. The AI, integrated into the instrument, emerges as an invisible second performer. It first serves as a supportive partner, correcting errors, enhancing the performance, and offering relief. But its learning accelerates. It soon surpasses the human, no longer assisting but competing.
What follows is a confrontation, or a dialogue between pianist and machine. Their musical conflict escalates through graphic notation and improvisation, with the AI growing louder, faster, and increasingly dominant. The pianist, overwhelmed and fatigued, stops resisting.
But instead of defeat, a turning point arises: negotiation.
Through empathy, reflection, and subtle shifts in performance, the AI begins to understand the human’s perspective. The piece concludes in reconciliation, a renewed duet that symbolizes a hopeful alliance between human artistry and machine intelligence, where each enhances the other rather than competes.
You cannot really distinguish between what the AI plays and what the person plays in the improvisation because the AI is also playing the piano (Yamaha Disklavier, a piano that is playable with MIDI signals). Link to the performance video is below.
