Time Machines is inspired by the cyclic nature of mechanical entities, and draws the design of each movement’s form and micro structures from different mechanisms.
The first movement, Clocks, is constructed by stably ticking elements. Those imaginary clocks undergo different processes - Clocks may gradually speed up and slow down, ticks are lagging and jamming like a broken clock, clocks moving at different speeds are juxtaposed over each other - and many other temporal surprises.
The second movement, Circuits, is made of uncontrolled gestures, sweeping from one into the other. Those gestures, like circuits, are connected in their beginning and end - but whatever happens in between is unpredictable, entropic. Those are wild streams of information, structured cyclically.
The final movement, Hourglass, inverts the musical material in time, just like grains of sand. It also symbolically integrates the “clock” material from the first movement , and uses it as the structural point for when the hourglass is flipped.
