"Wynken, Blynken, and Nod", by American poet Eugene Field, was published in 1899. Tanner Fenton set Field's original text to music, composing for piano and tenor. As heard in Fenton's one act play, "Shaken, On The Rocks", the song was performed by a man who is desperate to be a father, following his fatherless account of childhood to what he would sing to his future children before bedtime. Fenton was inspired by Irish sea shanties, as well as various musical theatre works.
Recording Notes
The vocals of this piece were sung by the original actor, Jacob Romeo, who played Lance in "Shaken, On The Rocks". The piano is a MIDI track that I adapted in Logic Pro.
