Hopscotch is part of a series of pieces for viola and household objects called Portmanteau. These pieces live deep in the rabbit hole of serendipitous encounters between the cheapest and most expensive things I own: together, my viola and the various objects create hybrid instruments capable of surprising sounds and gestures, and they invite reflections on materiality, consumption, and play. Hopscotch in particular was composed with a large dose of playfulness, after much experimentation on different ways of arranging rubber bands on the instrument.
