The ideas of this piece were primarily composed during my night shifts working at a psychiatric ward in Charleston, South Carolina. Most of these ideas were written down on scraps of paper, during windows when all the patients were asleep. It is composed of cells that were stitched together rather than the development of a single idea; this helps create a very frantic texture. Frequent changes in meter add to this unease. While it was not necessarily my intention in the moment, I feel this piece came to reflect the unpredictability and chaos of the environment in which they were conceived, an inpatient psychiatric ward.
