Synecdoche

Omne Initium Difficile Est - Every beginning is difficult.

The beginning of any new chapter is typically accompanied by a period of change that can be hard to adapt to. Interestingly, this movement was written fairly quickly—a sharp contrast to how I usually write. There are multiple elements in this movement that set up the rest of the piece in surprising ways.

Crescit Eundo - It grows as it goes.

This movement was originally written in 2021 and was an assignment from my first few months of composing. It became one of my favorite pieces and is the basis for the first and third movements. A small melodic idea is used in many ways and can be found throughout the entire piece. The texture of this movement is busy, but the energy of it is unmistakable.

E Pluribus Unum - Out of many, one.

One referring to many is at the core of what synecdoche is. On November 6, 2024, this phrase (a motto of the United States) took on a new meaning. Rather than one union forming from many separate states, one leader emerged from many forms of hatred. I began writing this movement that same day as a way to process what had just happened, while still moving forwards.

Throughout the piece, the part slowly becomes the whole and vice versa. Although this is a slightly different form of synecdoche, it keeps the piece held together—something that is hopefully in store for the future.
