UPRISING is the result of a nearly decade-long collaboration with clarinetist and electronic performer Paolo Ravaglia. It began in 2014 with the first version for the In My Life festival at the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome and concluded with this final version, which was awarded the Franco Evangelisti Prize by Nuova
Consonanza in 2022.
The title UPRISING reflects two interconnected meanings: the first, intrinsic to sound, is the ascending energy of harmonics emerging from the low notes—a central gesture of the piece; the second, more poetic, evokes the primary meaning of 'uprising' in English, a tumultuous rebellion that erupts with force.
The final section is written in a semi-aleatory style and can be performed extemporaneously through improvisation. The aim of this improvisation is to allow the performer to reach, using the sonic materials of the piece, the saturation of their technical abilities and physical limits. This boundary, to be understood in a purely musical sense and not as a conceptual or theatrical element, is the sound achieved through the maximum effort to fuse the instrument's body with the performer's physiology. This sound, being unique to each performer, cannot be fixed or standardized.
