Delphiniums was commissioned in 2023 by Molly Coffey, Jadelyn Talley, and Darius Turner as a closer for their senior recitals. Delphinium is a genus of annual and perennial flowering plants, commonly known as larkspur. The name derives from the ancient Greek word for “dolphin” due to the shape of the flowers. Like most flowers, delphiniums don’t necessarily have a concrete meaning but can represent friendship and wishes for a successful future. The piece makes use of complex rhythmic interplay and fast technical flourishes to create excitement and features cadenzas in the soprano sax and piano.
