- acervus (Latin: heap, pile), one of the examples with which the philosophers of the Eleatic School tried to prove the illusory nature of sensory perception: A scale of falling millet cannot produce any noise, because it consists of a multitude of grains which, taken by themselves, fall noiselessly to the ground. What is heard is a sensory effect that does not belong to the millet (thing) but to the sense.
