Calloused pages, turned by a tortured friend is a piece inspired by the effects of time and aging on humans and infrastructure. It uses percussive figures in the lower registers to flesh out moments where time can be powerful and overwhelming, while also contrasting this effect with the sweet and playful memories of juvenility. Imagery and themes of physical decay are prevalent throughout, with groaning and scuffing of rusted machines juxtaposed against the liveliness of those who built them. You'll experience moments of tonal motifs that lose their character and transform into timbrel motifs. I've strived to provide a more unusual and visceral listener experience compared to my past pieces by prioritizing timbre above all else for this piece. Recently, I have witnessed time's capability to cause more suffering than any person or thing in life. After ruminating on this realization I became fascinated with depicting the nature of time as something that takes, deteriorates, and destroys through sound. Ultimately, this music seeks to highlight the two-faced gift, torturer and blessing that is "time."
