'Displacement' is a four-movement piece that explores the journey of people living in their home country being pushed out of their homes by military invasions or political chaos. The four movements of the piece, titled 'Dance', encapsulates the festivities of people before they are displaced; 'Turbulence', depicting the challenges they face leaving their hometown, 'Chorale', embodying the bittersweetness of settling into a new place; and 'Remembrance', paying respect to the roots and origins of the people from a new place, where the theme from the 'Dance' movement is displayed in a major key rather than the minor key the theme was first introduced in. The first movement in particular was inspired by Flamenco dance music, where I employed the famous Andalusian cadence and used string pizzicatos to capture the sound of the guitar. I tried to imitate this dance style as the Gypsy population in Northwest India were politically displaced away from their hometown into Spain.
