Repetition and Difference is a work that arises from inquiries into being and identity, both in personal and aesthetic or artistic realms. Identity is not fixed, but dynamic; it is constructed through the experience of difference and repetition. It is this experience that allows us to relate to time, history, and the other. Along these lines, the work engages in a dialogue with Gilles Deleuze, Bernhard Lang, and previous works by the composer. The piece is, in itself, an act of repetition and difference.
In the work, this constant dialectic between difference and repetition is expressed at various levels. On one hand, there are repetitions of certain configurations that, although appearing "exact," are repetitions as "pure disguise"; as they sound and unfold over time, they produce infinitesimal differences—differences produced from within the repetition itself. On the other hand, there are sonic elements that repeat throughout the work, differentiated by their relationship within the temporal and material context, creating a deferred repetition that re-actualizes the present. Similarly, there are moments of formal articulation where qualitative differences are heard—instances where elements are reconfigured and pre-existing repetitive structures are subverted.
The work approaches the idea of repetition as a differential and creative repetition, what Deleuze would call "repetition as pure disguise," where "the true subject of repetition is the mask." That is to say, the repetition of the "same" does not exist, since every repetition implies a différance. Difference is what makes repetition possible.
