- In my recent work, I have reinterpreted popular dance genres through a variety of esoteric means. Kawaii future bass is a sub-genre born out of future bass, itself a branch of electronic dance music. It is characterized by the juxtaposition of heavy, square bass lines drawn from EDM and dubstep with layers of "kawaii" elements—chiptune synthesizers and other sounds shaped by Japanese pop culture. This piece, KawaiiBassFuture, however, hardly resembles anything of the genre. Instead, it unfolds like an alien attempting to construct something coherent from the descriptors above, within the context of an utterly bizarre combination of instruments. The result veers toward caricature at times, as each element—"Kawaii," "Bass," and "Future"—is dismantled, oversaturated, and hammered into place. Within this reconstruction, the piece searches for symbioses: between overstimulation and restraint, between digital and analog synthesis, all while situating them in dialogue with the acoustic realm.
