- In September of this year, I went to an exhibition of paintings by Andrew Wyeth where I saw a quote from the artist that reads “My struggle is to preserve that abstract flash like something you caught out of the corner of your eye.” This idea stirred up a lot of thoughts and associations for me. I thought about the French expression “Presque vue,” which refers to the feeling of being on the brink of an epiphany that you never quite arrive at. I thought about the physiological phenomenon called “averted vision” which allows you to see faint objects, such as a very dim star, more easily by looking just off to the side of it. So much exists at the edges of our thoughts and perceptions that seems to evaporate when we attempt to bring it into focus. I’m often trying to dwell in the spaces at the edges of my own understanding of music and sound, and this piece is then maybe an attempt at a sonic analogy to looking out of the corner of your eye.
