- The Distorted Mirror is my musical interpretation of the life and ideas of the philosopher Diogenes. When evaluating Diogenes’ ideas of shedding away all “unnecessary” eccentricities, I decided that the piece needed to be constructed using twelve-tone technique. In addition to some standard “0 position” rows on the matrix (P0, R0, I0), I also introduced the concept of a mirror version of each of these rows over axis of the five-line staff. In addition to the harmonic mirror, most of the extended techniques in the piece are meant to acoustically distort the tone rows to create a less pure harmonic and melodic foundation while introducing darker and more aggressive sounds.
