- On a personal computer with the Windows operating system, Ctrl+Alt+Del is the combination of keys that the user can press at the same time to terminate an application task or to reboot the operating system (have it shut down and restart itself). The function of the key combination differs depending on the context, but it generally interrupts or facilitates interrupting a function. As computers became ubiquitous, so too, has the jargon. Ctrl+Alt+Del can also mean to "dump," or "do away with". The keystrokes are well known and infamous for escaping from problems in pop culture/life, and of course, a project someone is working on. As was the case with this piece. The work started out with woodwinds and trumpets in threes along with three percussion players, harp, and piano. As the writing process continued, I felt I was deleting more than I was adding, not only notes and later instruments, but I almost Ctrl+Alt+Del the entire work itself. It seemed at the time, getting rid of more than adding helped “reboot” the piece and I was able to get a better feel and understanding for the material I was working with. As I was contemplating my actions and deeming how important or even justified they were, I realized that this is a good philosophy to keep in mind. Why keep things around in your life that don’t need to be there or don’t do anything, things that keep dragging you down and serve no useful purpose. Don’t be afraid to Ctrl+Alt+Del things that are weighing you down, but make sure that by doing away with you are only adding more value to whatever it is you are working on.
