- Program Notes
- I first discovered these texts a very long time ago in an unattributed Instagram post. They stayed in my camera roll for a long time, without a home, and an idea, until November of 2023. Then, I knew the role they would serve - a Spring concert premiere for FreundeMusik in 2024. With that inspiration struck, I began writing, using new techniques and practices I had learned at Maryland. The Rites are different from all my music prior - they more fully fuse my jazz background and choral experience into a show-stopping piece, honoring the goddesses of Spring.
Spring is a common theme in my work. As a trans woman, the idea of a season of rebirth and renewal is precious and fulfilling to me - the concept of the soul being reborn, blooming from tiny seeds. This trend continues in Rites #1, with a boisterous “hail, and welcome!”
