The echo chamber, as a media concept, exists in stark contrast to the idyllic promise of the Internet: the promise to make all information in the world available to anyone, without leaving the comfort of one’s home. Perhaps it is human nature to self-isolate in one’s beliefs. And this desire is reinforced by the commoditization of data and content curation algorithms. But on an even darker side of this phenomenon, many communities exist in which genuine fear, hatred, and suffering gets amplified through sheer ignorance or something as abstract as differences in ideology. This strikes me as the ultimate absurdity.
